My diagnosis was “melanoma in situ”. This means that the cancerous cells, or melanocytes, are confined to the very top layer of the skin–the epidermis. In melanoma terms, this is the best diagnosis to have, and the treatment was a wide-local excision.
The most common risk factors for skin cancer include sun exposure, indoor or outdoor tanning, previous sunburns, family history, more than 50 moles, long-term exposure to x-rays, and a history of smoking.
